The Wharf
Award of Excellence
Best of the Best Project

The Wharf reestablishes Washington, DC, as a waterfront city and destination. This remarkable, mile-long stretch along the Potomac River comes to life with restaurants, retailers, residences, and businesses — all complemented by monumental views and a vibrant culture. Several of our Awards of Excellence this year were given to different elements of the project.

At The Wharf, “community” has always had a larger meaning. From the start, it was the foundation this development was built on, the idea that informed every decision made. And it doesn’t just take into account the people who live and work here, but also its surrounding communities and the larger region as a whole. The Wharf is built on the vision of creating a place that brings the community together; a place that benefits its residents, neighbors, and visitors; a place that honors its past and welcomes its future — a place where DC meets to enjoy one-of-a-kind experiences at the waterfront.

Explore the mile-long waterfront development and you’ll find that each corner of The Wharf has a distinctive character — and is a destination on its own. Find the areas catering to gourmets, next to the community’s best shopping, right down the street from green spaces for fitness or relaxation.

From the development and construction of the buildings and infrastructure, to the operations of this community, The Wharf has already proven to be a major job creator in the region. In addition, the new businesses, restaurants, hotels, and shops that opened at the waterfront are a continuous multiplier of employment opportunities that will serve the neighborhood and its residents well into the future.

During construction alone, more than 8,000 people worked here, including 1,284 new hires. The Wharf team works diligently to meet and exceed the hiring goals established by the District of Columbia. The goal percentages listed below are for the duration of the entire development, including Phase 2. As of June 2018, The Wharf surpassed most First Source Program goals (a program that ensures city residents are given priority for new jobs created by municipal funding and development programs).

The Wharf is led by PN Hoffman and Madison Marquette, two accomplished mixed-use developers with national stature. With the first phase of District Wharf complete and thriving, it’s easy to forget how much time and effort went into making it happen.
