Executive Summary

From their humble beginning in 2010 based out of an old mechanic’s garage, Mapbox sought to create an East Coast Headquarters that represents their success as the leading location data platform for mobile and web applications. In searching for their ideal office, Mapbox desired a space that was reflective of DC and selected a historic building along 15th Street to call home. Originally built in 1906, many of the building’s original finishes were incorporated into the design including original terrazzo and mosaic tile floors, exposed brick walls, and hand-riveted steel columns. New finishes and materials were interlaced with the old to celebrate the building’s history.

The cutting-edge technology firm, whose staff is comprised mostly of Millennials, desired a space that celebrates their culture and supports their collaborative work style. The 17,000 SF, 100% open workspace offers staff a multitude of work environments to choose from. Aligning with their informal, non-hierarchical culture, there is no reception desk. Instead, visitors are greeted by an informal lounge reminiscent of a living room. Collaboration spaces, which constitute more than half of the space, range from informal to formal and can accommodate one to twelve participants. Every meeting room is equipped with video conferencing technology allowing staff to collaborate effectively with clients and team members across the globe. Gathering spaces are intertwined with work areas, which feature sit-to-stand desking and are flooded with natural daylight. At the heart of the space is a large, café that doubles as an all-staff meeting space. Featuring café tables, bar seating, sofas, booths, and a presentation screen, the space is flexible enough to many purposes.
